Urban Plunge - 1989

[Back to topic list] [Back to Jerry & Dorene - Civic Topic]

A program initiated by the University Administration for students to become aware of programs and facilities in the local community. The administration then decided to invite some community people to participate in these visits. We met at the Morris Inn early one morning and boarded a 16 passenger van including President Malloy, Ann and Bill Sexton, Chris and Carmi Murphy, Jim and Mary Ann Roemer a few others and myself. Destinations during the 2 days were Dismas House, County City Jail, Hope Rescue Mission, & Michigan City Prison.

Dismas House: There were a half a dozen out of prison serving adjustment time seeking work and learning how to live together.
County City Jail: Hardened criminals glaring at us.
Hope Rescue Mission: Attended mandatory prayer service prior to serving lunch to the residents.
Michigan City Prison: Did not visit this time since I visited previously. On the previous visit with the inmates we had lunch at the warden's home being served by a former server from the Indiana Club as a Trustee.
